Straight teeth are considered to be a sign of health and vitality, and they are a central component to a beautiful smile. For this reason, many patients will come to Dr. Bellisario in order to achieve a straighter smile. While traditional orthodontics has long been the primary treatment to straighten your teeth, they are not the only option. You can also achieve a straight, beautiful smile from porcelain veneers.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental porcelain that get bonded to the front surface of your teeth in order to improve the appearance of cosmetic imperfections. Veneers mimic the translucent properties of tooth enamel and can be color-matched to the shade of your natural teeth, ensuring beautiful, natural looking results.
This versatile cosmetic dentistry restoration can correct just about any cosmetic smile imperfection you may have, including the appearance of crooked teeth. Veneers are significantly more cost effective and require a much lower time commitment than braces, making them a desirable option for individuals who would like to avoid investing 1-2 years in traditional orthodontic treatment.
Porcelain veneers are often referred to as "instant orthodontics" because they can help you achieve a straight, beautiful smile in just 2-3 office visits. However, it's important to understand that you're not actually straightening your teeth. Your new veneers will cover the front surface of your teeth, masking any alignment and spacing issues that exist.
If your goal is to achieve the appearance of straight teeth, then "instant orthodontics" is a great option. On the other hand, if your goal is to correct the underlying functional issues associated with crooked teeth, then porcelain veneers won't deliver your desired outcome. In this situation, you will need to invest the time required for orthodontic treatment.
Your Porcelain Veneers Procedure
During your first appointment, Dr. Bellisario will create an impression of your teeth which will be used by the dental lab in constructing your veneers. Dr. Bellisario will also prepare your teeth to accommodate the veneers. This is accomplished by removing a very small amount of tooth structure (approximately 1/2 millimeter). In most instances, you will be fit with temporary veneers during this visit which will be worn until your permanent restoration is ready.
Once the lab has created your new porcelain veneers, you'll return to our office so that Dr. Bellisario can bond them to the surface of your teeth. Dr. Bellisario will make sure your veneers fit properly and are matched perfectly to the shade of your natural teeth. At this point, you will have a brand new straight smile to flash confidently.
