What To Do When You Lose An Adult Tooth | Bryn Mawr, Penn. There are many ways to lose a tooth as an adult. You could have been injured playing sports or during an altercation. Maybe the aging process caused a loose tooth to come out. Whatever the cause, there are a couple things to keep in mind if you'd like to have the tooth placed back in its proper place.

If you've lost a tooth, call Dr. Bellisario in Bryn Mawr at 610-642-7024 immediately about your dentistry options and follow these steps:

1. Find that tooth.

Your only hope of re-implanting your natural tooth is to find it. Pick it up carefully by the crown and not the root. You don't want to damage any part of the root and hurt your chances of putting it back in the socket. Teeth the same day could be your best option if you've lost several teeth.

2. Clean the tooth.

Rinse your tooth with milk, saline or saliva. Don't rub or scrub the tooth. Remove dirt or grime by gently rinsing it. You may need a dental implant if the tooth has been damaged.

3. Put it back in the socket.

Put the tooth back in your mouth and in its socket. You will most likely have difficulty making it stay in place so use a clean cloth or gauze to hold it there. If it just won't stay, you can keep it safe between your cheek and gums. Your saliva can fight the bacteria the tooth was exposed to after it fell out. Some people may not be able to stomach this step. If that's the case, you can put the tooth in milk or saline.

Caution: Don't soak your tooth in water. Water will only damage the root and could wreck your chances of fixing it.

4. Call Dr. Bellisario

Call our dentist in Bryn Mawr before or after you've completed steps one through three. The longer you wait the more likely you will need cosmetic dentistry.

There are preventative actions you can take to avoid losing an adult tooth including brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Athletes are the most likely candidates to lose teeth. A good way to avoid a tooth-related sports injury is to wear a mouth guard, helmet or face mask.
