What Are Inlays/Onlays?

Serving Greater Philadelphia, including Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, & Newtown Square.

Inlays and onlays are alternatives to full dental fillings and crowns that are excellent options for patients with certain kinds of structural damage. Both are made from the same material and the process is similar. The main difference is where they’re placed! To learn more about dental inlays and onlays, please contact Ardmore general dentist Dr. Jeffrey Bellisario attoday to schedule an appointment.

An inlay is a dental restoration method in which a material, usually porcelain or a composite resin, is shaped to fill a tooth cavity outside the mouth and then placed. This is in contrast to a traditional filling, in which a soft restorative material is placed into the treated area and allowed to cure in situ.

Onlays are similar, except rather than replace traditional filling, they offer attractive substitutes for traditional dental crowns.

A major benefit of inlays and onlays is that they preserve more of the existing natural tooth as possible. If you only have moderate tooth decay, these technologies may be right for you, and only two office visits are necessary. In the first visit, Dr. Bellisario takes detailed impressions of the tooth to be treated, and the inlay or onlay is fabricated to his exact specifications. On the second visit, your inlay or onlay is bonded to the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are excellent alternatives to full dental crowns and are a great choice for certain patients.
